2010-2011 Lisle District 202 Calendar

March 2010

Lisle School District 202 believes that bullying, intimidation, and harassment diminish a student’s ability to learn and a school’s ability to educate.  Preventing students from engaging in these disruptive behaviors is an important District objective.  Our Board has adopted policies (7:180, 7:190, 7:20, and 7:310) that support this position.

The junior high school bullying program began during the 2002-2003 school year and we have added and refined various components during subsequent years.

While no school is exempt from bullying, we are alert to these situations and aim to develop a school-wide atmosphere of tolerance by accepting differences.

To that end, many activities take place during each school year.  This includes information shared with faculty on bullying, Climb Theater presentations (where actors cover topics such as harassment, respect, peer pressure, and bullying), Challenge Day and a Challenge Day student committee, student participation on our bullying prevention committee, student created anti-bullying videos and posters, courteous speech posters, and participation in our BeCAUSE (Being Culturally Aware Understanding and Sensitive) Club.

In addition to these activities, our guidance office works with students on a regular basis to provide individual counseling, conflict resolution intervention, and support groups for such things as anger management and peer relationships.

With these activities and programs, our students have learned to help others, seem more comfortable informing school personnel when they are being bullied, and feel that something will be done to help them.

We take bullying very seriously and will continue to be responsive and work hard to prevent these harmful behaviors and having programs in place that meet the needs of all of our students.

HOMEWORK HOTLINE!

Forgot your homework assignment? Didn’t write it down in your assignment notebook?...Absent from school?...Don’t panic!…Now there’s an easy way to track down those assignments.

Beginning with the second quarter of the 2009-2010 school year all you need to do is go to the Lisle Junior High School Homework Hotline to check each day’s homework.

How do you get there? Simply go to the district web page at www.lisle202.org and click on the “Junior High School” tab. Now look to the left side of the screen for the “Homework Hotline” button. Scroll down and click on the date you are searching for and you’ll see the homework for each class. Assignments will be posted by 3:30 PM each day.

The homework hotline is NOT a replacement for assignment notebooks. It is expected that our junior high school students will continue to write the assignments down each day and to know what is expected of them.

We would encourage parents to continue to check student’s assignment notebooks each day as well.

Homework assignments from each day will be archived and may be accessed by going to the “Junior High School” tab and clicking on the “Archives” tab located on the top far right.

This will take you to a new screen. In the “Enter keyword(s)” box type in “homework hotline,” and the date (month, day, and year) of the assignment. Click on “Search.” A new screen will appear, click on the specific date needed, and you’ll have the homework.

As always, if you have any questions you may contact the classroom teacher. (E-mail addresses are the teachers’ first initial and last name, followed by @lisle202.org.) Thank you.

We are pleased to announce two new ways we will be recognizing students beginning this year at Lisle Junior High School:

PAWS

Lisle Junior High School faculty and staff are committed to the success of all students. Students demonstrating appropriate behaviors/actions in an exceptional manner will be recognized by being selected to be a member of the junior high school PAWS

 (PositiveAdmirable…Worthy…Students) Club.
The PAWS Program will recognize students who:

• Exhibit exemplary behavior and fine character
• Exhibit acts of kindness, caring and courtesy
• Are role models on a daily basis for other students
• Are consistently respectful, responsible, and give their best effort
• Work hard at academic improvement

Students will be selected on a weekly basis by teachers and will have their names announced during the Monday morning announcements.
Their pictures will be taken and posted on a certificate which will be posted on our PAWS bulletin board. The students will also receive a copy of the certificate to bring home.
At the end of each month, all of the students receiving a PAWS award will have their name entered in a drawing to be eligible to win a monthly prize.

STRAIGHT A STUDENTS

During the 2009-2010 school year, we will be recognizing our Straight A students in the following manner:

• At each grade level we will award Straight A certificates on a quarterly basis. The students who earn Straight A’s will have their names read during morning announcements and will be asked to come to the office to receive their certificate.
• We will distribute certificates at the end of the year for students who received Straight A’s for the entire school year at our awards ceremonies. These students will also receive a gift card.
• Students who earn Straight A’s for all three years of junior high school will be recognized at our 8th Grade promotional ceremony with a certificate and gift card.

There will not be any “weighing” of grades. A grade of “A” must be earned even if the student is in an AT class.
This recognition of Straight A students will take effect with the first quarter of this school year.

IMPORTANT!

Dear Families of Lisle Junior High School:

As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in Lisle Junior High School. We want to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season. But, we need your help to do this.

We are working closely with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the DuPage County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools. In order to have appropriate data for decision making and surveillance, our school will submit a daily absenteeism report for both students and staff. Due to our ongoing efforts to assure the health of all students, if you call your child in absent, please indicate whether it is because:

    a. Your child has an Influenza-like illness which includes: fever, greater than 100 degrees F,         and a cough and/or sore throat in the absence of another known cause; or
   b. Your child has other reasons for being absent today.

For now we are doing everything we can to keep our school functioning as usual. Here are a few things you can do to help.

Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.

Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. Covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.

Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.

Do not send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.

For more information, visit www.flu.gov, or call 1-800-CDC-INFO for the most current information about the flu. For more information about flu in our community and what our school is doing, visit our web site at www.lisle202.org or call the school office. We will notify you of any additional changes to our school’s strategy to prevent the spread of flu.

Sincerely,

Lisle Community Unit School District 202
